On March 1st, Google will implement its new, unified privacy policy, which will affect data Google has collected on you - prior to March 1st - as well as data it collects on you in the future. (Read the private policy here)
Google claims the single private policy makes it easier for users. Google explains “Our new Privacy Policy makes clear that, if you’re signed in, we may combine information you’ve provided from one service with information from other services. In short, we’ll treat you as a single user across all our products, which will mean a simpler, more intuitive Google experience.”
Watch the video for a concise and insightful summary of the policy update:
So great - searches will be catered even more to the user right? Kind of.
In a few days, if you search for a video in youtube - it can be combined with information from other Google services including search, Gmail or Google’s new Google+ social networking site.
Another thing is that not only will your future searches be included in Google account consolidation - your past web history will be too.
So, as a student, should you erase your web history?
There is no certain answer, it acually depends on if you find your past web history valuable or a potential threat.
Look at your search. Are most of your searches academic, professional, relatively clean, and average daily searches - such as news, recipies, shopping, and more?
Use good judgment and think about if it something a potential employer would find - would they prove or disapprove of it?
Huffington Post Technology journalist, Larry Magid, said, “Whether all this is good or bad depends on you and your trust in Google. Personally, I don’t mind targeted ads (I prefer them to irrelevant ones) and I’m not particularly worried about Google’s using its combined database to invade my privacy. ” (You can read the rest of his article here.)
The biggest thing to think about as the college crowd (versus older demographics) is we have had our accounts for a while - maybe some of us since highschools. Can some of the old seraches be immature and threatening?
So what to do in the future while searching? Limit on what google collects.
Larry Magid details steps on how to protect your privacy from Forbes.com:
- Don’t sign into Google
- Use your browser’s “private” or “incognito” mode
- Clear your Google history
- Review your Google dashboard
- Clear your browser’s history

“Top Brands on Social Media Week: What Intel, Adobe, Wells Fargo, Edelman, and SAP said”
If you have been following Social Media Weekaround the globe these last few days, you would have seen some of the world’s best known brands, thought-leaders, and social media advocates come out to voice their ideas, share their opinions, go on rants, and predict the future. While these passionate (and sometimes animated) conversations never quite rose to a Tom Cruise on-the-couch moment onOprah (“I love Social Media!”), they were delivered with energy and enthusiasm for the way the business world has evolved.
Missed the intelligent discourse today? I was on hand with one of the panels as SVP of Edelman Digital and author of Smart Business, Social Business, Michael Brito (@britopian) directed the conversation on business culture, content, and global reach for organizations thinking about social.
Culture:
“We just hit our 6 millionth fan on facebook … today, as a matter of fact,” begins Director of Social Media for Intel Becky Brown (@beckyannbrown). “We could only accomplish that with a Center of Excellence delivering great content into our countries around the globe and letting them tell their stories, their way, on a local level.” She continued that for Intel, the Center of Excellence means they have a central team that helps develop the social strategy for Intel, but they require local “in country” teams to help them deliver the message.
